FAQs For Our Clinical Counseling

Although the terms “clinical counselor” and “therapist” are often used interchangeably, there are some slight differences based on the qualifications and training of the professional. A clinical counselor usually refers to someone with a Master’s degree in counseling or a related field licensed to provide therapy. On the other hand, “therapist” is a broader term that can include different mental health professionals, such as psychologists, social workers, and counselors. In essence, both clinical counselors and therapists provide mental health support and counseling services.
Yes, the BC Medical Services Plan (MSP) covers some counseling services offered by registered psychologists or social workers enrolled as MSP providers. People with MSP coverage can avail themselves of a limited number of subsidized sessions yearly through MSP. However, it is essential to verify with your counselor or therapy provider whether the coverage is applicable and if there are any associated costs.
The cost of counseling in British Columbia can vary depending on various factors, such as the counselor’s qualifications, location, type of therapy, and whether you have MSP coverage or private insurance. If a registered psychologist or social worker is an MSP provider, then MSP may partially cover the cost of the session, and you will be responsible for any remaining fees. Private clinical counseling sessions without MSP coverage can cost anywhere from $100 to $250 per session, but the fees may differ significantly. Before starting any sessions, you should inquire about fees and coverage options directly with your chosen counselor or therapy provider.
